Caspar’s Happy Tail: The Little Gelding Who Got a Second Chance

Caspar’s journey into our care is the kind of story that reminds us why Heart N Soul Farm Rescue & Rehab exists.

At just four years old, this rose‑grey AQHA gelding had already lived through more than any young horse should. Standing a sweet 15.1 hands, Caspar tried his heart out in early barrel training — until a small fracture in his left front pastern changed the course of his life. Instead of receiving rest and rehabilitation, he was sent to a kill pen. Injured. Confused. Disposable in the eyes of the people who should have protected him.

But that’s where we stepped in.

Because at Heart N Soul Farm Rescue & Rehab, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to giving equines and donkeys a true second chance, we believe every life has value — especially the quiet ones like Caspar who never stop trying.

A Gentle Soul Ready to Bloom

From the moment he arrived, Caspar showed us who he really is: soft‑eyed, willing, and full of try. He’s halter broke, easy to catch, stands politely for the farrier, ties well, and absolutely lights up when treats appear. Positive‑reinforcement training has become his favorite part of the day — he learns quickly and genuinely enjoys the connection.

Whether he was ever fully started under saddle is unknown, and his future as a riding partner will depend on the adopter’s veterinarian. Our vet’s 2023 X‑rays show a fracture gap on the articular surface of P1 at the proximal pastern joint, and we’re happy to share those images with serious adopters so your vet can help guide his long‑term plan.

But here’s what we do know:

Caspar is sound in spirit. He is kind. He is willing. And he is ready for someone to love him for exactly who he is.

A New Beginning With People Who Truly Saw Him

Caspar’s story didn’t end at the rescue — it opened into something even better. He was adopted by a young man who dreamed of training his own horse, but who also understood the responsibility that comes with that dream. He and his family took the time to learn Caspar’s history, review his X‑rays, and fully understand the limitations of his old injury. They knew he would never be a competition horse — and they didn’t want him to be.

What they saw instead was his heart.

With the steady guidance of his grandmother — a lifelong horsewoman with decades of experience and many trained horses behind her — Caspar now has a team who is committed to giving him all the time he needs to heal, grow, and learn at his own pace. Their hope is for him to become a quiet, dependable trail partner someday, and they’re giving him every opportunity to get there gently and correctly.

The boy brings the enthusiasm. His grandmother brings the wisdom. Caspar brings the willingness that has always defined him.
